Space Heroes by Mark Guilianafeaturing Chris Morrissey, Jason Rigby, Mike Lewis
Mark Guilianahas become recognized as one of the world’s leading drummers, admired and in demand across the spectrum from jazz to rock to electronic music for his rhythmic sophistication, creative impulse, and individual sound. Guiliana was chosen as Best Jazz Drummer in the Modern Drummer Readers Poll 2017, while Down Beat dubbed him a Rising Star in its Critics Poll. He is in the vanguard of drummers creating a new vernacular on the instrument. Now, he makes his first Houston appearance, with his newest project Space Heroes, featuring bassist Chris Morrissey and saxophonists Mike Lewis and Jason Rigby.
Guiliana tells SFJAZZ’s On the Corner, “’Space’ is referring to the space within the music. By not having a guitarist or a regular keyboardist, it leaves a lot of room to explore. We all take a bit of a heightened responsibility, and it certainly doesn’t have to mean that all the space gets filled in by default. This is my first real opportunity to write for two horns, to consider the personalities of these specific musicians, and I want to make sure I’m leaving enough space inside for their personalities to shine.”
“For many observers, he’s the guy to watch if you want to know where the great art of drumming is right now —and where it could be headed.” — Modern Drummer
“Guiliana, a technical master with a rare sense of musicality, has over the past decade become one of the most influential drummers of his generation.” — JazzTimes
